Board Minutes March 6, 2017

CAL COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

BOARD OF EDUCATION

REGULAR MEETING

MARCH 6, 2017

 

The CAL Board of Education met for a closed session meeting that began at 7:07 p.m. in the District Office.  Present were board members Mitch Vanness, Austin Elling, and Cathy Carlson.  Rob Peil and Jacob McNutt were absent.  Also present were Superintendent Todd Lettow, District Administrator Steve Lane and Secretary Amanda Heiden.  Elling moved that the board hold a closed session as provided in section 21.5(1)(i) of the open meetings law to evaluate the professional competency of an individual whose performance is being considered to prevent needless and irreparable injury to the individual’s reputation, as that individual has requested a closed session, the motion was seconded by Carlson.  Roll call was taken: Vanness, Elling, and Carlson all ayes.

Jacob McNutt arrived at 7:25 p.m.

A motion to come out of closed session was made by Elling, seconded by Carlson.  All ayes.  Roll call vote was taken: Carlson, McNutt, Vanness, and Elling all ayes.  The board came out of closed session at 7:36 p.m.

 

The CAL Board of Education met for its regular meeting on March 6, 2017 in the CAL District Office.  President Mitch Vanness called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m.  Present were board members Mitch Vanness, Cathy Carlson, Jacob McNutt and Austin Elling.  Rob Peil was absent.  Also present were Superintendent Todd Lettow, District Administrator Steve Lane and Secretary Amanda Heiden.

A motion to approve the agenda was made by McNutt, seconded by Carlson.  All ayes.

A motion to approve the consent agenda and to pay the bills was made by Elling, seconded by Carlson.  All ayes.

The board recognized visitors Stephanie Thielen, Mardy Schaefer and Ethan Stoetzer.

Stephanie Thielen presented to the board about the senior trip and requested that the class be allowed take an overnight trip to Chicago.  The board gave the go ahead to make plans.

The board reviewed the facilities and transportation report.  Mr. Lane and Mr. Lettow gave their administrative reports.

The board reviewed a proposal from Mr. Lettow to offer early retirement.  A motion to approve offering two and a half years of single insurance to certified staff for early retirement at the end of the 2017-2018 school year, was made by Carlson, seconded by McNutt.  All ayes.  A motion to approve offering $60 per day of unused sick leave up to 102 days into insurance or tax shelter annuity for early retirement at the end of the 2017-2018 school year for classified staff was made by McNutt, seconded by Carlson.  All ayes.

A motion to approve a driver’s education contract for Jerry Shafrath was made by Elling, seconded by McNutt.  All ayes.

The board reviewed information on the 2017-2018 budget.  The board set the budget hearing for April 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the CAL District Office.

A motion to approve the changes to the 2016-2017 school calendar was made by Carlson, seconded by Elling.  All ayes.

A motion to approve the proposed 2017-2018 school calendar was made by Carlson, seconded by McNutt.  All ayes.

Short discussion was held on the Washington D.C. trip and that teacher Amy Adams was willing to be the sponsor for the trip.

The board called for summer mowing bids.

A motion to approve the Koenen lawn quote for Broadleaf Herbicide application was made by Elling, seconded by McNutt.  All ayes.

A motion to approve the teacher contract list was made by McNutt, seconded by Elling.  All ayes.

A motion to approve the changes to the support staff salary schedule and the contract list for the support staff was made by Carlson, seconded by McNutt.  All ayes.

The board reviewed three open enrollment applications out of the district, two to Belmond-Klemme and one to Hampton-Dumont.  A motion to approve three open enrollment applications in to the district all from Clarion-Goldfield-Dows was made by Elling, seconded by Carlson.  All ayes.

Short discussion was held on the summer food program.

A motion to adjourn was made by Carlson, seconded by Elling.  All ayes.  The meeting was adjourned at 9:44 p.m.
