Coming Down the Backstretch!

The CAL Community High School and Middle School Students have the first half of their last year at CAL behind them and are heading into the backstretch or second semester of the school year.   While this is quite a milestone for the students and staff of the district, as most have never experienced this much change in their education.  My observation to this point has been one of positive, upbeat attitudes on the part of everyone.  This second semester will, however, be rather busy as we try to squeeze many special activities into our last few days of the year.

We have high school groups scheduling activities such as a Spain Trip and a Washington D.C. Trip yet this year.  Of course for these events, there will be several fundraisers to make these trips possible.  Our last Prom will most likely be a very special event as well, and the Post Prom parents are already making plans for this special time.

As these special events come on the Master Calendar, we will attempt to give public notice far enough in advance so everyone can take part in these activities.

We are indeed fortunate to have both Hampton-Dumont and the CAL Districts working together to make this transition as positive as possible.  We have had two visits with our middle school and high school students to the Hampton-Dumont Middle School and High School to learn about the courses they will be offered next year. These have been attended well each time.  While the academic trips have been quite positive according to the students, they are now ready to meet the students that will be their classmates next year.

Our middle school students have been invited to Friday evening dances for the past several years, with usually three dances each year.  Our student numbers attending these dances has improved over the years and the students have had a great time.  Our middle school students are probably the most excited about the future of whole grade sharing, since sharing athletics and participating in the dances has been great for the student interaction that we had hoped for.  Thanks Tony and H-D Middle School Student Council!

Our two School Boards have had several joint meetings that have been positive and very productive in order to make this transition go as smoothly as possible.  Many of you might not be aware of this, but the Hampton-Dumont and CAL Boards of Education have actually had joint meetings for several years now to prepare for the future and we are now finalizing plans to create a positive learning experience for all of our students.

I would just like to thank the Administration of the Hampton-Dumont School District, Ellen Pickhinke, Tony Spradlin, Jen Koenen, and Steve Madson, along with Superintendent Todd Lettow for working hard to make our students feel welcome next year.  Mr. Lettow has been extremely helpful as he has met with our students and asked them about concerns they might have for the coming year.  He has given several talks to groups of students to keep them informed of some of the changes they might encounter.  He has also met with our teaching staff as a group several times and individually to keep the lines of communication open.

While we know the end of a very long era is coming to a close, the opportunities for our students will be numerous and in my opinion – extremely positive!  Thanks to everyone in both districts that are working to make this the best for our students!
