“Curriculum” is all of the experiences a student encounters throughout his or her learning in school. At CAL Elementary School, we strive to provide an engaging curriculum for our students centered around the Iowa Academic Standards, sound instructional practices, including the Workshop Model, and quality assessment practices. On this page, we would like to share an overview of the curriculum we offer for our students.
Content - The knowledge and skills expected to be learned. Across our curriculum we use the Iowa
Instruction - The strategies and practices used in the classroom to deliver the content. Many of our subject
areas use the Workshop Model as a framework for instruction. We will describe it in depth below.
Assessment - How we measure students’ attainment of the knowledge and skills expected of them. At
CAL we use a variety of assessments to measure student learning, guide our instruction, and monitor our curriculum.
In the pages below, we will overview each subject area and highlight the resources and strategies we use to deliver the content for our students.
Throughout the year our curriculum is directed by thematic units that are integrated into the standards. These units are character building traits and life skills that our students need to become productive members of society. The themes are intertwined within all content areas and routines at school. Every quarter, the school has an overarching theme that ties all grades together, and each classroom has a subtheme that builds upon the theme from the previous year.
