When you ask students to describe Mrs. Mardy Schaefer you will get answers of she always pushed me to do my best, she believed in me, she made me want to accomplish more, and she is a big Cyclone fan.  We’re proud that Mrs. Schaefer has been making such a positive impact on the students of CAL for 37 years.

Mrs. Schaefer began teaching at Meservey-Thornton after graduating from Iowa State University.  She taught 1st grade for 3 years before she started at CAL.  She said that she always wanted to teach in the community she was living in so when the job of 7-8 grade language arts and elementary TAG opened up in 1981 she applied and was happy to get hired.  Mrs. Schaefer said that CAL had a reputation of being an innovative school so she was excited to join the CAL staff. A few years after starting at CAL, an elementary classroom teacher position became available and she transitioned to teaching 6th grade.  Then when 6th grade moved to Dows she began teaching 5th grade, where she continues to teach today.

The students become like family, Mrs. Schaefer describes, as they work closely together to achieve the student’s academic and social goals.  CAL’s philosophy is driven by the question, “What is best for the kids?”. Mrs. Schaefer has enjoyed working with many great teachers, associates, secretaries, administrators, and board members who have embraced ideas that put CAL’s students first.  Many of those same staff members have become not only great work colleagues, but also great friends. She says she feels very blessed that her career has led her to some of her best friends.

One of Mrs. Schaefer’s favorite times of the year is the Night of the Notables event, which this year’s 5th graders led last week.  Students are portrayed as famous individuals who they feel have made a positive impact on American history.  History comes alive as the students use their research to create a biographical report, a Google slide show, share artifacts and share a first-person speech.  Mrs. Schaefer says she loves seeing the students shine before the audience as they experience that feeling of accomplishment. She adds that the parent and community support for this event and for all of CAL’s endeavors is second to none and is just another reason why CAL is such a great place to teach.

Mrs. Schaefer is excited for the future of CAL as the elementary anticipates building renovations and new curriculum initiatives.  She believes our small rural school has been and will continue to be a wonderful place to learn and to teach. And that is exactly why retirement seems to elude her!
