CAL Senior Madi Vanness gives us a preview of some of the highlights and experiences they had:

In early April four CAL Spanish students including myself had the privilege to join our Spanish teacher, who is a native of Spain on a two week long trip to her homeland of Northern
Spain. The students were Brock Guerrero, Bailey Snyder, Madi Vanness, Nate Rapp and Delany Peil. While in Spain we experienced many new aspects of the European culture.

The first week we stayed in the region called Navarra. In Navarra we stayed in a town called Arteta. This is the area where Mrs. Arzoz’s extended family lives. We had the opportunity to meet her whole family and they are amazing. While in Spain we traveled to Pamplona, which is where the annual running of the bulls takes place. We toured a castle from the Medieval time period in the city of Olite. One of the days we even had the opportunity to go to France, which
was beautiful. Another big part of Spain we went to was Santander. This is a coastal city where Mrs. Arzoz and her family lives.

Every day there were new learning experiences. We had the opportunity to stay with host families for the second week of our trip. We were also able to attend a few of their classes at
school. The school we went to was where Mrs. Arzoz teaches English at when living in Spain. While living with our host families, we figured out quickly that their eating schedules are very different from ours. They eat a small breakfast, eat lunch around 2:30- 3:00 and eat supper around 8:30-9:00. Because of this, the students don’t eat lunch at school. These were big
adjustments for us. We also noticed how eco-friendly the European countries were.

These are just a few of the many experiences we had together while in Spain. It was a trip of a lifetime and we are so grateful for all the support shown to us from the community.
